The Cause of War

To fulfill my credential requirements as a teacher, I took a writing course at Western Michigan University in which I was the oldest student by far, a good 40 years older. Thus, I was the contemporary of the teacher and I am not if that is what created tension in our discussions. I suppose that I did speak up to disagree with his reasoning more than the others from time to time. And I wondered if he felt threatened by me since we shared the same historic events in our nation and I could speak with authority about them as much or perhaps better than he. I suspect he didn’t have many students like me.

Indeed, if we do not need religion to live a particularly good and happy life.

On Being a Citizen

I recently received an e-mail from my friend, Lorraine from New Hampshire. In it, she shared some of the news about her kids, her son Rich who is recently engaged and her daughter, Lynn, whom she will visit to help baby-sit her two grandsons. But at the end of her missive was talk about politics. Her husband, Peter, is very much involved in politics, actually ran for some public office, for something like city alderman, as I recall. He is supporting a candidate for the state legislature. She indicated that even though Pete's candidate is a long-shot, there might be a chance in this strange political year
