Spiritual Odyssey: Larry Lauderback and Karen Lumsden

This will be the first Spiritual Odyssey of what we hope becomes a tradition here at Emerson. Two members of Emerson are asked to tell the story of their faith journey, that is, how they came to be Unitarian Universalists and members of Emerson Church. This is one of my favorite events. The two celebrants for this Sunday will be Larry Lauderback and Karen Lumsden. Both Larry and Karen, have fascinating stories to share with us.

Youth Sunday: Kids against Hunger

Social Action is something children and youth feel strongly about. Careful of the world they are growing up into, they take very much to heart the responsibility to make change happen. Our UU Emerson kids like their part in the social action of the church.

This service highlights their dedicated sense of responsibility to the process of making our world a better place to live in. Through skits profiling social activists, presentations on our world community and actions to be done to reduce world hunger, and with dance and contemporary music, the service promises to provide reflection, lift up the spirit and move you toward action.

Also, the Birmingham Unitarian Church Youth Choir joins voice with our Emerson Children's Choir to sing. ~ Laura Ross, Lifespan Director of Religious Education

We Need Your Help!

You are getting your items sorted, priced and ready to bring in for the Rummage, Book and Plant Sale, but you forgot to sign up to work the sale. I know how it goes. To refresh your memory, I have attached the pertinent info below for your review. You can call me (248-524-6894) or email me (fcoughlin@wowway.com) or sign up during the potluck on Sunday. Your help is needed! Without it, there can be no Rummage, Book and Plant Sale and we will all miss ECUU's biggest fundraiser, as well as a great social event. ~ Freda Coughlin

You may bring in sale items on SUNDAY, MONDAY AND TUESDAY, ONLY, during the hours shown below, or by appointment.

PLEASE:
  1. Sort all items into separate boxes or bags and mark contents (clothing: women’s, men’s, boys’, girls’ baby/toddlers’, household items, electronics, books, games, toys, books, CDs, etc.);
  2. Securely attach a slip on each item indicating size, price, condition, etc. No clothing will be accepted without a size and price tag;
  3. Place masking tape on all appliances indicating condition (good, new, needs a part, etc.) and price;
  4. Put dresses, shirts, coats, suits, pants and sweaters on hangers (we have extra hangers if you need them);
  5. Donate paper bags;
  6. Arrive ½ hour before your assigned shift;
  7. Resist the temptation to “dump your junk”. If it doesn’t work, is broken or cracked, missing pieces, etc. it cannot be sold and our dumpster is small; and
  8. Sign up to work at least one shift. There is no shortage of job opportunities, from setting up to sorting to selling to cleaning up. This is a good way to get to know others in the church, see what will be on sale, and help the church financially. Work assignments are in two-hour segments or less. Sign up sheets will be located on the coffee hour table after April 1, along with suggested pricing information and tax deductible donation receipts.

The Price of Civilization: Taxation and Morality

My friend Sharon was a serious procrastinator when it came to paying her income tax. One time we rushed to the post office near midnight of April 15, the absolute deadline and there we were in a queue of about 30 cars as a postman standing on the corner to retrieved people’s last gasp of citizenly duty.

It makes one wonder about taxation. It makes one wonder about people. Perhaps, we all should wonder more about what we want for ourselves as a people and how we are going to pay for it. ~ Rev. Beu

Easter: Salvation as Metaphor

Easter is always difficult for me to celebrate. But there is something compelling in that story of a good man who suffered unjustly and still showed grace and humanity.

I do believe we can learn a lesson here about a different interpretation of salvation, not meaning eternal life, as in, going to heaven when we die, but as in a way of living in the moment with grace and humanity. ~ Rev. Beu
