Growing Old Gracefully

It is interesting that when I was teaching in alternative education, I often felt that I was more alive than my students. Most of them had lived hard lives in hard circumstances and their spirits had grown weary.

But of course, I was older, much older.

That begs the question: what does it mean to be old and to grow old. I will try to find out and share with you an answer. ~ Rev. Beu

Rob and Stefani on NPR

Two of our own, Rob and Stefani Barner, were on NPR recently talking about their experiences as a military family.

You can hear the one-hour interview by visiting http://www.thestory.org and clicking on the "listen" link on the left side of the screen. It's a very emotional interview - I strongly recommend it.

Documentary Series: The Ground Truth

Emerson will be hosting a viewing of the documentary "The Ground Truth" on Feb. 16 at 7 pm.

The movie is a gripping first-hand account of the experiences of Iraqi War Veterans, both abroad and at home. There will also be a Q & A session with members of Military Families Speak Out and Iraq Veterans Against the War after the viewing.

Visit www.thegroundtruth.net for info about the film. Not appropriate viewing for children.

What Would Martin Luther King Jr. Say About War?

Martin Luther King, Jr. became something of a pariah late in his life. He was too kind and loving to his enemies, according to the radical blacks. He was too impractical and quixotic according to the practical political types. And he spoke out against the war in Vietnam, which cost him the support from President Lyndon Johnson, who did more for civil rights than any other president, including Abraham Lincoln.

Still, King had an important and insightful analysis about that war and all war. His thoughts are as timely now as they were then. This Sunday, we will honor Dr. King and listen once again to his prophetic words. ~ Rev. Beu

Happy New Year!

This Sunday's Service is entitled "Welcoming Our Gay and Lesbian Friends".

This is a sermon that truly should not have to be given. It makes no more sense to say we welcome gays, lesbians, transsexuals, or transvestites as any other group. However, given the prejudice and hatred against people who have certain sexual orientations, it becomes necessary for our church and religion to speak out and say that which is obvious. All are welcomed. ~ Rev. Beu
